The sniper

Name: Instructor: Task: Date: The Tragedy of War in “The Sniper” The short story The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty is an exquisite piece that brings out the futility of war. The story revolves around a sniper who is out one night on duty and is engaged in a duel with an enemy sniper. Our sniper finally manages to outwit his foe and shoots him dead. In the cause of this engagement an old woman and another soldier are shot dead too by our sniper all in all a total number of three dead within one night. brother. It is quite ironical that participating in a war to exterminate enemies results in turning family members against each other. The writer ends the narrative without telling the reader what the sniper felt after realizing that he has murdered his brother. The net effect of this is that the reader will be able to extrapolate at the futility of war. The sniper must be asking himself what was he fighting for and what has he achieved from participating in this war. War is senseless and only succeeds in dehumanising and turning family into anonymous enemies.
