“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again but this time more intelligently.” by Henry Ford. In other words, this quote states that when individuals make mistakes, it gives them an opportunity to reconcile the complications caused by the mistake. Individuals need to react to events decisively and effectively so they don’t repeat the mistake again. Considering, if individuals were able to rewrite their past, they wouldn’t be in constant fear of the future and won’t have to wait every day for something to change their life. Also, individuals who fear their past failures and let that affect their present situation would not tend to give up on their life and would not wait for everything become better on its own. In contrast, there are also individuals who learn from their mistakes, take risks to make their own paths to settle their unstable life. The pursuit of Happiness directed by Gabriele Muccino is a movie about a resilient individual named Chris Gardner who has been through a lot of complications in his life due one wrong investment of his entire life savings. He invested his money on Bone Density Scanners which were not effective but very expensive. This brought a drastic downfall in his life. He would work day and night trying to sell the scanners but was unsuccessful, this resulted in his wife Linda leaving him and his five-year-old son Christopher. Moreover, Chris wouldn’t have enough money in his bank account to pay rent and support his family which was the main purpose of his wife leaving.Nevertheless, he never gave up but made ways that will turn the table for him and his son.In the movie Pursuit of Happiness, it is shown that when an individual’s past mistakes have an impact on their current situation and are given an opportunity to mend it, the individuals must take a chance at it and therefore create their own path would make to a better life.

Initially, before Chris went through calamities in his life he was shown as a wise individual who worked for the Navy and was always the top student of his grade. Unfortunately, due to one wrong decision Chris ends up losing everything he had and his life starts to collapse from there. After, Chris worked for the Navy, he invested all his life savings on bone density scanners. The investment started a cascade of adversities in his life. One bone density scanner can provide his wife, him and his son with a month of groceries. But even so, because he failed to sell them the investment did not provide him with any profit. Doctors believed that it was an unessaccary luxury that had a slightly better image than the X-Ray and wasn’t worth spending the money. He would strive day and night so he can sell it and was mostly unsuccessful but occasionally he would sell one, this would provide for him and his family. Chris’s wife Linda had to work a double shift at the laundry because Chris wasn’t able provide his family with a reasonable earning that they could live off. Linda was tired of seeing Chris failing everyday to sell one of the scanners and all she wanted from Chris was a non stressful life. For this reason, Linda left Chris and their son Christopher. Linda was unable see how hard Chris was working to sell the bone density scanners but he never gave up and never ran away from his responsibilities. Also, he did not want to repeat the mistake that his father made in Chris’s childhood. His father left him when Chris was a kid and he didn’t want to repeat the mistake that his father made of running away from his son’s responsibility. Chris met his father at the age of 28 and did not want his son Christopher to yearn for a father as he did when he was young. His mistake of investing in bone density scanners caused him to lose all his wealth, this was the which lead to his wife leaving him but this gave him an opportunity to not repeat the mistake his father had done.

However, Chris was resilient and looked for opportunities. He instantly took them whenever he encountered any, this took him one step towards a better life and away from poverty. Chris thought of being a stockbroker because he knew he was good with numbers and people. Regardless, there was a very low chance that he will get the internship because he was at a disadvantage. He was at a disadvantage because he was a father and his main responsibility was to take care for his son, he didn’t want to make the mistake his father made. He wanted to nurture Christopher in a way that he doesn’t feel the absence of his mother. Also, he had not gone to university which further put him at a disadvantage compared to the other candidates. Nevertheless, he worked twice as hard others as did to achieve his dream. To accomplish his goal he tried to impress an employee named Jay Twistle, so he can get suggest Chris to the board. One day he encountered Jay and to impress Jay he shared a taxi ride in which he solved a Rubix cube, back then the Rubix cube was only be solved by intelligent people, it was solved the fastest in 30 min but Chris did it in one short taxi ride. This impressed Mr. Twistle and he suggested his name to the board. Then he was called to the interview but before the interview he was behind bars because he wasn’t able pay his parking tickets. When he went to the interview he was not formally dressed and had paint on him. Regardless, Chris impressed the board and they gave him a chance to participate in the 6 month internship. But when Chris found out there was no pay he hesitated to accept the offer. He soon realized that this was the only way his life could change so he took the chance. For the six months of internship he had to survive off of the unreliable bone density scanners. Although, he knew he had to face many problems because of the density scanners. Lastly, he took a risk to compete with interns who had an advantage over him such as new graduates and back then coloured individuals were not taken seriously. Also, being a father put him to a disadvantage compared to the other interns. Chris was an individual who wasn’t going to give in any circumstance and took risks to turn the tables around.

To make any wish come true individuals have to work hard to make it possible like Chris did.
Furthermore, he has portrayed a caring father, and as a wise individual who wants to achieve big dreams by taking risks.
