Introduction to Poetry Billy Collins I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide or press an ear against its hive. I say drop a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out or walk inside the poems room and feel the walls for a light switch. I want them to waterski across the surface of a poem waving at the authors name on the shore. But all they want to do is tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it. They begin beating it with a hose to find the tone shifts and write 50 words in which you explain why Collins makes this shift. a. I say drop a mouse into a poem b. I want them to waterski c. But all they want to do X Line 12 represents a significant shift because it concentrates on the desires of them rather than the desires and instructions of the speaker. However the line creates some kind of suspense because it is unclear what the audience wants to do. Therefore the speaker uses enjambment technique in both line 12 and 13 because the 13th line provides an insight to the suspense in the 12th line of the poem.
