Student Name: Reading: A Good Man is hard to find by Flannery O’Connor Summary of the Story The story is about a family planning to go for a road trip. It starts with Grandmother who is complaining about going on a road trip to Florida. She prefers visiting her friends who were residing in East Tennessee. She is really worried about high chances of the Misfit attacking her family members: Bailey (her son) his wife June Star and John Wesley their children and the baby. She has been reading about the Misfit in the newspaper. The Misfit is a serial killer who has escaped from the Federal Penitentiary and is on the loose. Nonetheless the next morning the family sets out on their planned road trip to Florida. On their road trip the family stop at The Tower for barbecued sandwiches where they find the owner Red Sammy Butts twins who had died the previous winter. Despite the failure of the medicine to heal her children she was still relying on this medicine to heal her. Interpretation This poem implies that despite the failures most poor people encounter in their daily lives they still rely on the same strategies for success. In the poem irises are used as a symbol of hope which poor people continue relying on even though it does not bear any fruits. Connection to the Society The story connects to the society since the incidences that occur in the story are witnessed in the society. For instance Maggie trusts irises will heal her although they failed to heal her twins. In the society people trust people that have failed them in the past. Importance of the Reading This poem is important since it reveals the challenges faced by the poor people in the society.
