Name Institution Course Professor Date Teaching of Reading Introduction In essence the manner in which people learn how to process text/ textual information- the nature of reading- has been a contentious issue that has for long been a subject of research especially by behavioral and cognitive scientists. This is due to the recognition that there need to have effective mechanisms to teach reading and enhance comprehension of textual information. This paper seeks to analyze an article that presents teaching methodologies to enhance reading as well as the subsequent approaches. As such this paper seeks to argue the thesis that teachers need to understand the nature of learning from texts and comprehension of reading from textual information as that would help them create a basis for evaluation and improvement of learning environments. Learners need to can however use both approaches or integrate the methods or elements of the two approaches; and the article suggest the interactive perspective as most efficient for new learners. Conclusion Concisely teachers of reading need to have a proper understanding of teaching reading and comprehension of textual information. As such understanding the two approaches discussed in this paper for teachers gives them the ability to integrate the methods from the two approaches in what has been termed as the interactionist perspective. Students would benefit more when the teacher understands all available approaches and methods to teach reading. Organizing my Reaction Paper: A reaction/response paper has an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. • The introduction should contain all the basic information in one or two paragraphs. Sentence 1: This sentence should give the title, author, and publication you read. Sentence 2, 3, and (4) These sentences give a brief summary of what you read Sentence 5: This sentence is your thesis statement. You agree, disagree, identify, or evaluate. • Your introduction should include a concise, one sentence, focused thesis. This is the focused statement of your reaction/response. More information on thesis statements is available. • The body should contain paragraphs that provide support for your thesis. Each paragraph should contain one idea. Topic sentences should support the thesis, and the final sentence of each paragraph should lead into the next paragraph. Topic Sentence detail — example –quotation –detail — example — quotation — detail — example — quotation — detail — example –quotation Summary Sentence • You can structure your paragraphs in two ways: 1. Explain author’s point– your comment supported with details/examples/quotations 2. Explain author’s point– contrast with your point of view support with details/etc. • The conclusion can be a restatement of what you said in your paper, or it could be a comment which focuses your overall reaction. Finally, it can be a prediction of the effects of what you’re reacting to. Note: your conclusion should include no new information.
